Tips
for Downloading Overdrive Audiobooks

- Windows 95 and the original edition of
Windows 98 are not supported. Your Windows computer must be using Windows 98
SE or above.
- Most
audiobooks will now
work with Apple products such as iPods, and you may now choose between
Mac and Windows versions of the Overdrive
Console. Please note that
these titles are in WMA (Windows Media) format--which generally don't
play on iPods. However the, new Overdrive media console will allow the
WMA's to be converted and used on iPods. You MUST download the new
console to enjoy the new cross-compatibility. The link to download the
new console is here: http://overdrive.com/software/omc/
- If you need to purchase an MP3 player,
we cannot recommend a specific brand or model. Overdrive offers lists
of compatible
devices. The May, 2002, Consumer Reports also contains reviews on MP3 players. We suggest you look for an MP3 player
with bookmarking ability, so you can begin listening to your book
where you left off the last time. For more in-depth information on
bookmarking, see this article
and discussion
thread on Cnet.com.
If you have trouble
while attempting to download audiobooks, check Overdrive's Troubleshooting
Page. Some other things to try are:
-
If you are using
Firefox, make sure you have the latest version. Go to the Help menu at
top, then choose Check For Updates.
-
Make sure you have
the latest version of Sun Java. Go to your Control Panel and look for
the coffecup icon. Double-click the icon, click the Update tab and
then click Update Now.
-
You might be missing
codec files in Windows Media Player. Open Windows Media Player, choose
Tool, then Options. Click the Player tab and make sure the box is
checked by Download Codecs Automatically.
-
When attempting to download your first
audiobook, you may be prompted to upgrade the security of Windows
Media Player. Frankly, sometimes doing it through Overdrive doesn't
work. If you have trouble, you can do the security update directly
at Microsoft.
